The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks.

The Feynman Technique, developed by Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman, is a powerful method to enhance your understanding of complex concepts. It involves four key steps:

Feynman’s learning technique comprises four key steps:

  1. Select a concept to learn.
  2. Teach it to a child.
  3. Review and refine your understanding.
  4. Organize your notes and revisit them regularly.

Let’s delve deeper into these steps.

Feynman’s secret lay in understanding the true essence of a concept rather than merely knowing its name, leading to his remarkable achievements. This learning technique can be applied universally, irrespective of the subject.

Step 1: Select a Concept to Learn

Choose a topic that you want to deepen your understanding of. Begin by writing down everything you already know about the subject on a blank sheet of paper. As you learn more about the topic, continue adding your new knowledge to the sheet. Using different colors for new information can visually highlight your growing knowledge.

Step 2: Teach it to a Child

Simplify your notes so that you could explain the chosen concept to a 12-year-old. Avoid using jargon and complex language; instead, use words that a child would easily understand. The goal is to distill the concept down to its core essence. This step helps you reveal your depth of understanding and identify any areas where your grasp might be lacking.

Anyone can make a subject complicated but only someone who understands can make it simple.

Step 3: Review and Refine

Write out your simplified explanation. The process of writing enhances reflection and learning. Reflection is a crucial part of the learning process as it helps you understand what you know and what you need to further comprehend. Ensure that your notes are devoid of jargon and any confusing elements. If anything remains unclear, refine your explanation.

Read your explanation aloud as if you were teaching it to a child. If any part sounds complex or confusing, it’s a sign that you need to refine your understanding. Revisit the source material and focus on the parts that you find challenging. Repeat this process until you have a clear and simple explanation.

Step 4: Organize and Review

To test your understanding, present your explanation to someone else. Pay attention to their reactions and the questions they ask. This will help you gauge the effectiveness of your explanation and identify any areas that might still be unclear. Once you’re satisfied with your understanding, take the sheet containing the simplified explanation and store it in a binder. By applying the Feynman Technique to every subject you learn, you can build a binder filled with organized and simplified explanations. Periodically reviewing this binder will help reinforce your understanding over time.

Incorporating the Feynman Technique into your learning routine can lead to a deeper understanding of complex concepts across various subjects. This method emphasizes the importance of simplicity, clarity, and continuous reflection in the learning process.
